Driving Licence Name Change

For England, Scotland and Wales, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will be able to update the name on your driver’s licence and car registration. You must notify the DVLA immediately after changing your name and should send in your drivers licence for amendment.  The DVLA can also update your car registration but require a different form to be sent in.

The DVLA allow brides to take a double barrelled surname on presentation of just a wedding certificate.  If you are taking a double barrelled surname it is best to change your licence first as it will make other changes easier down the track. 

The DVA manage the same process in Northern Ireland and also require you to update your licence and car registration as soon as practical after your wedding.  You can check the DVA website for further information.
